Teen unseats father in Golf upset
Beat the General founder's son, Michael Stass of Chesterfield Township, acting as team captain, led his team to a surprise win over veteran golfers wile winds gusted up to 29 miles per hour during the 8th annual Beat the General golf tournament at Selfridge Golf course on Sunday, August 28th 2011. Golfers enjoyed mild temperatures in the low 70's, Mark Hackle; Macomb County Executive said he hoped the wind would straighten his slices. Sherriff Tony Wickersham didn't carry his boss through the tournament.
Twenty Four teams of 96 total golfers vied for the title of winner of the eighth annual Beat the General.
Two teams tied for best score with14 under par. The tie was broken by scores on the 18th hole where Michael Stass's team eagled the hole, winning the tournament. The team was made up of Michael Stass, his uncle Vaughan Hounslow and his high school golf coach Alex Humphreys from De La Salle. The son of BTG founder Andy Stass was very pleased to win, but even more pleased to show up his father. The younger Stass said they only used two Mulligan's and "one didn't even help" them.
Second place went to Burtek team with Mitch Howell, Toll Schill, Dan and David Salkowski.
Third place went to Burtek's second team with 13 under par. The team members were Jeff Beatty, Don Keddie, Ed Niesluchowski and Jim Thorpe.
Nineteen (a record number) OIF/OEF Veteran Soldiers, Marines, Airmen and Sailors were sponsored to golf and dinner thanks to the generosity of Lanzen Fabricating, Parker Hannifin Corp., AM General, Oshkosh, E&E Manufacturing, L-3 Communications and ProteXus Crew Protection Systems.
The dinner/program included remarks from the General designate Kurt Stein. An update of the various Youth for Christ East Michigan activities as well as stories were told of military youth who have found solace in Club Beyond, led by Kevin Collins, Director of Military Youth Ministries. MSgt Jay Mayberry gave his firsthand account of the impact of YFC has had on the students he has worked with as a volunteer with YFC in the Boy's Basketball outreach. Click here to watch a video.
